About GSi
The Government Secure Intranet (GSi) is the strategic back office network infrastructure that allows the many different government and public service organisations in the UK to communicate securely with each other and certain approved key suppliers, and for the UK to function as a joined up modern state within the European Union.
The GSi allows its customers to exchange and publish information in a secure environment separated from the public Internet, thus protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of that information.
The strategic role of the GSi is to join government and the public sector at various levels:
| Within Organisations | separate physical offices within the same organisation may be connected using the GSi WAN service. |
Within Departments: | functional agencies or offices may similarly be joined up with their parent organisation |
Within Communities: | the GSi can create and join together logical communities of interest, such as Accountants or Trainers or HR departments, from multiple customers across the GSi |
Within the UK: | the GSi interconnects with the other major public sector networks, such as Criminal Justice, MOD and the NHS |
Within Europe: | via connections to the EU TESTA II network, the GSi provides a secure communications link connecting the UK to other member states and central EU institutions |
