There is a growing public sector need to use Geographical Information (GI) to underpin business decisions and to improve the quality of services to customers.

GI, together with associated systems, is used for tasks as diverse as:

  • mapping and public dissemination of information via the internet from crime, health and environmental statistics through to information on local amenities and transport networks
  • development of models that predict the type and extent of forest and woodland for a variety of seasons and years and their impact on recreational areas
  • predicting the location and potential effects of epidemics enabling effective responses to different scenarios to be planned
  • maximising the efficiency of emergency response
  • recording and measuring change in natural habitats and landscapes
  • the assessment of land for its suitability for site specific industries and activities, for example health facilities.

The GISS framework agreement meets this need by delivering a range of GI products and services under three specific categories:

  • Lot 1: GI Solutions - end-to-end GI solution provision including consultancy, design, development, implementation, integration, data transfer, maintenance and support
  • Lot 2: Map Making Services - map making services ranging from collation of source materials using various technologies, cartographic presentation and design to printing of final map sheets. It also includes digital-mapping, aerial and LIDAR mapping services, map scanning and updating services, format and media conversion
  • Lot 3: Data Capture, Analysis and Manipulation Services - including updating, audit and management of data, data evaluation and analysis, data and image processing, archiving and hosting, photo interpretation and evaluation, surface production, geo-database manipulation analysis and scoping for data capture techniques.
