Banner's 'Green Optimisa' Service
Banner is one of Buying Solutions stationery suppliers. In addition to stationery supplies, Banner offers a ‘Green Optimisa' service which benchmarks the environmental performance of deliveries and the company suggests ways in which the customer can help to reduce the environmental impacts (and costs) of delivery. The following areas associated with delivery are measured and addressed:
- Carbon emissions from delivery vehicles
- Packaging
- Paper utilised - orders, returns, labels, invoices
The company uses a model to calculate improvements based on the adoption of best practice. Banner suggests actions for environmental improvements in delivery - by consolidating orders to reduce deliveries and packaging, and electronic ordering - and targets for improvement are agreed with the customer.
The service is important for SOGE because:
- Reduction in product packaging, by consolidating orders, helps towards meeting the SOGE target for waste reduction
- Reduction in paper use associated with orders and delivery also helps towards reducing waste
- Under SOGE, Government Departments and their agencies are required to buy products and services with low carbon supply chains, Banner's ‘Green Optimisa' service aims to reduce carbon emissions associated with delivery of stationery products
- Also, Banner takes a responsible approach towards its use of product packaging, by seeking to: reduce size/volume, and weight, of packaging, use returnable/reusable packaging materials, utilise recyclable materials for packaging and use recycled materials in packaging (paper-based materials)
