Legal and sustainable timber sourcing

The UK Government has developed a timber procurement policy which requires central government to actively seek to buy timber from legal and sustainable sources.

Framework suppliers can offer timber products under two categories.

Category "A" Evidence: Certification Schemes

They are certification schemes that have been assessed to meet the UK Government's criteria for legality and sustainable, as of December 2006. Check www.proforest.net/cpet* for the most up to date result.

In cases where the certified product is not coming directly from the chain of custody holder, additional Category "B" evidence will be required: Checklist1: Supply chain information.

Category "B" Evidence

This is the minimum standard if a competing bid is unable to produce an acceptable offer for "sustainable" timber.

Tenderers are required to meet the Category "B" requirements for sustainability, supply chain, and forest source legality demonstrated by completing the following checklists:

  • Check list 1: Supply chain information.
  • Check list 2: Forest source information for legality.
  • Check list 3: Forest source information for sustainability.
