About Government Procurement Service Energy
One of the UK's Biggest Energy Buyers
The public sector is one of the UK's largest energy customers, accounting for over 10% of the nation's entire commercial energy market. We purchase over 50% of this volume, managing more than £1 billion of annual procurement of gas, electricity and liquid fuels.
That makes us one of the biggest energy buyers outside the industry itself and the UK's largest public sector energy buying organisation.
In fact, we are the only public buying organisation legally able to provide these services throughout the whole sector and have been identified as best practitioners by the Pan Government Energy Project Team for our knowledge, skills and experience in energy purchase and risk management.
We are also regarded as major innovators in the energy field, including the introduction of Power Purchasing Agreements, Automatic Meter Reading and services to support the Government Carbon Offsetting Facilities.
The Government Procurement Service Energy Team operates out of our Liverpool and Norwich sites, with defined responsibilities but working closely together via permanent communications links and regular teleconferencing.
At the core of the team is a group of energy market and trading professionals split into three groups, respectively responsible for:
- Trading – energy purchasing with portfolio risk measurement and management services
- Procurement – supplier and customer activity for electricity, gas, liquid fuels, bureau services and the health sector (integrated in October 2009)
- Customer acquisition and new products
