Ambulance communications

On 19 July 2005 the Department of Health awarded a contract toAirwave to provide a new digital radio and communications system for NHS ambulance trusts in England. The contract is worth £390m over 13 years.

The contract is for the provision of a TETRA digital radio service including the Integrated Communications Control System (ICCS), radio terminals and the integration of existing Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems to the Airwave network.

The new digital radio service will replace the existing analogue systems currently used by ambulance trusts. This means that trusts will be equipped with a new communications system, improving quality, capacity, and inter-operability with other emergency services and each other.
