Remote Worker Service (RWS)

The GSi Remote Worker Service (RWS) has been developed to allow GSi users more freedom in the locations from which they can access their secure systems, creating a modern system of flexible working. Barron McCann provides the encryption expertise for this service.

The RWS allows access to an organisation's corporate network and email service from any location, as well as Internet access. Software is installed on the specified laptop or PC, which facilitates efficient working outside of the office. The service can include using 3G cards to access the Internet from your laptop, enabling truly remote working. Some public wi-fi spots and hotel connections cannot be used as they require separate authentication from the system which would infringe security requirements. We are currently exploring different options to overcome these security issues.

The main benefit to employees is flexibility. It provides solutions for those who need to check their emails whilst traveling and allows working from home even if this is only required on an occasional basis. The RWS allows you to continue working with your normal office technology in any situation; including when it is necessary to work outside standard office hours. It enables staff to work effectively outside of the office, while maintaining the security of the department's connection.

The RWS reduces demand for office space, realising major cost savings in the process. Instead of having an allocated desk per employee, some remote working staff could share hot desks. It can enable the objectives of the Lyons initiative, allowing workers to operate outside of London and aids business continuity by allowing employees to work from home in the event of a major disaster.

In keeping with the drive to reduce carbon emissions, the RWS reduces the need for commuting. There is less reason for staff to be physically present in the office so it is possible to reduce travel time and therefore help meet environmental targets.

The RWS is currently available at the 'Restricted' security level and we are planning to develop products to support the needs of customers with higher or lower requirements. The RWS itself has been accredited, and it uses Barron McCann's X-Kryptor product which is the only CAPS approved device of its type on the market. The CESG Assisted Products Scheme entails rigorous reviews of all security and cryptographic elements of a product including detailed code reviews.
