Shared Applications Managed Service (SAMS)
The GSi Shared Applications Managed Service comprises a comprehensive set of services under a single contract for the development, hosting and support of applications which enable cross-government working, information and knowledge sharing. The service exploits GSi common infrastructure and connectivity to secure government communities including GSi departments, CJX, PNN and GovConnect. Hosting and support services are accredited to support security access levels up to and including "restricted" level, while also offering Internet-facing capability for sharing unclassified data and for collaboration with non-GSI organisations.
A tariff of professional services is available at competitive daily rates to support the entire application lifecycle from conception through requirements definition, development and acceptance to deployment and handover to support. The service has the facility to develop new applications though the use of COTS packages and technologies, bespoke development, or a combination through systems integration. It supports the enhancement of these applications over the life of the contract.
The secure hosting service, located in a professionally run data centre, offers a choice of shared or dedicated hardware, with the cost of the shared, accredited, secure infrastructure and associated application management and support services rolled into the contract. This provides the cost benefits and economies of scale of a shared service along with the ability to quickly create, deliver and host applications in a secure environment.
The support service comprises a helpdesk run to ITIL guidelines which offers a single point of contact and manages the resolution of all faults whether hardware or software related in accordance with pre-agreed service level agreements. The service offers infrastructure and application management, including back-up services, as well as providing application-level support for either GSi SAMS or your own bespoke or third-party applications. The service can also manage hand-off to third-party support providers as required.
The prime contractor is Cable & Wireless with a specialised public sector supplier, SciSys, providing support, application development and related professional services, bringing access to a wide range of skills and domain expertise. One community being hosted on SAMS is the Knowledge Network, which has recently transferred over to the GSi from the e-GU (part of the Cabinet Office). Further information on this community can be found on the Knowledge Network website*
