BlackBerry use on the GSi
The Transformational Government Report (2005) sets out the Government's objectives for increasing efficiency and effectiveness in the way we work and provide services to the citizen, through better use of technology. One such technology that can greatly help to deliver these aspirations is mobile technology.
"To improve access for people on the move or without fixed phone lines, a step-change will be made in the use of mobile phones and other mobile devices to exchange information and transact directly with citizens and front line staff."
Research In Motion's BlackBerry®, gives you a single device which allows you to:
- make and receive phone calls
- send and receive text messages and emails
- have internet access
- have the ability to watch video files and listen to audio files
And you can have all of this, with connectivity to the GSi, whilst ensuring the security of the GSi community.
To start using BlackBerrys® on the GSi a simple RFC (Request for Change) form will need to be submitted to Cable&Wireless via email.
The request will then be sent to Buying Solutions for approval. The change will only be approved if the relevant CESG guidance for Blackberry implementation is being followed. This guidance is the BlackBerry® Security Procedures for Administrators Issue 1.4 and the BlackBerry® Security Procedures for Users Issue 1.3. (these links are only available to existing GSi customers). This includes guidance on password settings, MMS settings, wireless settings and attachment settings.
When your Code of Connection is due for submission, the change in your network should also be noted on the Code of Connection documentation. It is important to note that BlackBerrys can only be used on Restricted, not Confidential, security level networks.
A range of BlackBerry® devices are available from Buying Solutions' Mobile Solutions framework agreement. All four of the major network operators are service providers to Mobile Solutions, so it doesn't matter which network you use, BlackBerry® could help your organisation make a significant contribution to Transformational Government.
